February brings us so much! We are past all those silly New Year’s Resolutions and on to better ideas. February is Arizona Statehood Day…Happy Birthday State 48! February is also Black History Month. Join us in awareness and honoring our friends in this space. Remember to shop local black-owned businesses and help support our members (now and always).
And of course…
February…the month of love, right? Meh. This can be a magical time, if you are into the Hallmark holidays. It can also be a real rough time, particularly in our community. While many of us struggle with the concept of love, what it means, and how we express it, the additional pressure of outside judgement on the LGBTQIA expression of love can be tormenting, shaming, and overall difficult. We have come so far as a whole, and yet, we have so much further to go. Together we can make a difference.
Here at the Gaymber, we strive to create an inclusive space for ALL. In a world where we continue to see anti-gay and anti-trans legislation, the Gaymber is actively involved in advocacy for our community. If you feel pulled to contribute to this cause, we would love to have your voice heard. Join us by reaching out to Heidi Trevethan, chair of the Advocacy Committee. It is important that we have a seat at the table, and the Gaymber is pleased to be in conversation with the other Chambers of Commerce here in Southern Arizona, ensuring we have a cohesive voice amongst business leaders in the community. This is a brave initiative dealing with many issues impacting our community. Having our voice heard in this arena is imperative and I am proud to serve on this coalition.
Is Advocacy not quite your cup of tea? There are plenty of other ways to get plugged in at the Gaymber. I have been the Social Committee chair for the last year, and we are currently looking for members to help bring the fun. Whether you like the smaller events like Out & Abouts or the smashing Gayla with the whole community, there is something for everyone. Not only do we create the fun, but we also are a super fun group and we would love to have you join us. Drop me a line and join in the fun!
Looking for other ways to get plugged in? The Membership Committee is creating an Ambassador Program to aid in community outreach and integration. Reach out to Joanna Marroquin or Liane Wong for more information.
We also have our regular monthly breakfasts on the 3rd Thursday each month. Not only is this a great networking opportunity, but the food is delish and it is always educational and fun. Space is limited and we are reaching capacity every month, so register soon and see you there!
